Doodles

Pencil, paper and no source materials.

Generally, in these drawings, the pencil does the talking – the image just emerges from the marks.  There is an occasional reference to source material – the  cat in the drawing titled ‘Curiouser and Curiouser’ being an example of this.  But in the vast majority of cases whatever the initially random marks suggest to the eye is what they develop into.

As the name suggests they have their origins in actual doodles, the ones I used to do to counteract the boredom of  staff meetings.  It was a friend, looking over my shoulder in an Art Society meeting who persuaded me to do them on a larger scale on decent drawing paper.  They are mostly about A4 but some are larger.   The ‘Super Doodle’ (see video below) is much larger at 4.5 metres long – drawn in a concertina sketchbook I was given as a present.  It was awarded a prize in the Harris Open Art Exhibition in Preston.
